Brush clearance and defensible space: the basics

By the Diaz Gardening & Landscaping team. Updated .

Short answer: Defensible space is the buffer between your home and the plants around it. Keeping dry grass mowed, dead growth removed, trees trimmed back from the roof and debris cleared out of the yard helps. Requirements differ by location, so always check with your local fire authority.

Keep the area near the house clear

Remove dead plants, dry leaves and debris close to the house, roof and deck. Keep gutters and the roof clear of leaves and needles.

Mow and cut back dry growth

Keep grass and weeds cut short, and trim shrubs so that fire cannot easily climb from low plants into trees.

Trim trees away from the home

Cut back branches that hang over or touch the roof, and remove dead branches from trees.

Store wood and fuel away from the house

Keep firewood, propane and other flammable items well away from the walls.

Check the official rules

Requirements and inspection standards are set by your fire authority and differ from one place to another. Use the official sources below to check what applies to your property.

Where we help

We can mow, cut back overgrowth, trim trees and shrubs and haul away the debris. We do not certify that a property meets any fire code, so check with your fire authority.

This is general guidance. Every yard is different. If you would like us to look at yours, call us or send a request.
